Items columnist for the Advocate in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, since 1979. Smiley Anders is known for his gentle humor.
Anders was born in Natchez, Mississippi, and received both a B.A. and an M.A. from Louisiana State University (1959 and 1971). He began his career as oil and gas editor for the Shreveport Times (1960—1962), then was information director of the Louisiana Farm Bureau (1963—1967) and public relations director of the Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce (1967—1973). He was first employed by the Advocate in 1973 as a business reporter. Then in 1979, managing editor Mike Walker offered him a position as full-time columnist. Anders has also worked as a book reviewer for the Sunday Advocate Magazine and as a free lance writer for automotive and real estate periodicals.
Anders’s six-times-weekly column is tightly geared to its Louisiana audience and makes use of varied humor forms, including short verse.
